Fake Foveon Adventure

NoteBook Computer FMA2210 - WIP/Work in progress

In the past (around 2002), I had the opportunity to work for a military contracting company that served the Polish Army. It was an incredibly fascinating job, and it marked my initial venture into the commercial world as a C/C++ software developer. I had the privilege of collaborating with a group of like-minded individuals, including Robert, Paweł, Marcin, and Mirek. Although it's unlikely that any of them will come across this message, I want to express how much I cherish the memories of that time; it was truly an awesome experience.

While we were tidying up the company warehouse, I came across an extremely ancient laptop that was destined for the trash can. Without hesitation, I mustered the courage to ask, "Could I possibly take it?" And just like that, it became mine!

Just look at this beauty!

Seems that company that created this piece of art was "Nan Tan Computer Co".

It was working in 2002 and... even in 2015 - in this picture running CheckIT test software.

I vividly recall connecting this laptop to my primary computer through the RS232/COM interface and transferring some software. It had been installed with DOS/Win3.11 a long time ago, and it appeared that data wasn't vanishing as easily as it does on modern NAND-based devices.

However, the laptop has ceased functioning for some unknown reason, and now my mission is to revive it.

Let's look at power supply.

PSA-242 Power Supply. the spec says 24V... let's see if that's still true.

Noice.  Regrettably, the laptop is no longer functional. Whenever I try wiggling the power socket jack, I only hear static noise or cracks. It's possible that the power socket has become desoldered, leading to an insufficient flow of power through the main board, rendering the laptop incapable of powering up.

We have to open this beast.

What is inside:

  • Intel 386SX - 20 MHz (NG80386SX-20  / C STEP)

other chips on the motherboard:

  • MC146818AP (real time clock)
  • CIRRUS LOGIC video BIOS
  • AWARD BIOS ISA/386SX
  • Headland HT21/D  WF15917P  (286 and 386SX mainboard chipset)
  • p8242 Intel / phoenix - (keyboard controller)
  • OKI M4164-10 (multiple, its just DRAM 64k x 4-Bit  / 100 ns)
  • PEEL173P (programmable EEPLD, something like xilinx/PGA I guess)
  • 74ACT244 (line buffer)
  • Seagate ST9235AG (hard drive, 209.7MB   985 CYL / 13 HEADS / 32 SECT)
