I was on search for a portable medium telephoto lens. A decade ago, I might have chosen the Sigma 100mm F1.4 or the Sony 135GM, impressed by their technological advancements despite their weight. However, my preference now leans towards something lighter, striking a balance between aperture size and weight, while still favouring prime lenses.
In the past, I was using Canon 100mm F2.0 as middle of the road compromise, but I gave it away to a family member and have been on the lookout for something comparable - for FE-mount.
Suddenly - Samyang introduced a product that, while not exactly F2.0, comes close(DxO measurement of Canon 100 F2.0 - T2.2) It is designed mostly for video work - this does not matter as lens can be used as regular one.
Camera recognizes Samyang as an F2.2
I usually use heavier lenses like the Sony 24GM (F1.4) or the Canon EF50L but lately, I've been valuing portability. The most important thing for me now is to have camera with me. So, I've been using the Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton S.C. lens the most (@1.4 it is like digital lomography). So you can see that sometimes portability might be the key to use lens at all.
100mm V-AF lens is impressively lightweight and small, which positively surprised me.
Samyang lens contain plastic components, this doesn't detract from quality—at all. Despite its lightness, the lens doesn't feel cheap or inferior in any respect. I'm not sure what it is but from the first moment of use I really like this lens (this is not sponsored article!).
The autofocus is sufficiently fast (faster than the Canon 100mm with Metabones), and the image quality is pleasing—more so than I expected. Perhaps in the future, I'll conduct a direct comparison with its old Canon counterpart to check for differences.
So what left to do?
- compare with Canon EF100mm 2.0
- enjoy the lens and see how it will perform in the future (I'm using it for 3 days only)
Below some snapshots I've captured walking with my dog (color corrected / edited).
